"As recently as twenty years ago, the term Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was virtually unheard of.  It’s not that the malady wasn’t around; it’s just that the label hadn’t been coined back then.

In the 1980’s, ADHD kids were the problem ones in school.  They couldn’t pay attention in class, they were constantly disorganized, and recess was a time of joy for them.  They were always being yelled at and reprimanded and felt frustrated 95 percent of the time they spent at school.

This author was in grade school in the 1970’s.  Having been diagnosed as a gifted child, school came easy to me.  Unfortunately, so did boredom.  That lack of activity manifested itself into a type of hyperactivity that these days would probably have been labeled as ADHD.

But in the past decade, the amount of ADHD diagnoses has skyrocketed.  It seems like every single classroom has at least one child on medication for ADHD.  Adults are even being diagnosed with Adult ADHD."

So a guy walks into a bar and asks the bartender….. How many jokes have you heard start out that way.  The bartender is the main focus of any commercial bar.  Forget about the waitresses.  Sure they bring the drinks, but the bartender has to make them.  Forget about the fry cooks serving up greasy fries.  It’s the bartender who has made you crave them.

Bartenders have enjoyed a long and storied history.  They are the psychiatrists that you don’t have to have an appointment for.  They are the ones you hear all the best jokes from.  They are the ones who show you the neatest bar tricks to impress your friends.  The bartender, for some people, is the best friend they never had.

Tending bar is more than just pouring a cold draught beer or mixing up a mean screwdriver.  With all the new drink combinations out these days, bartenders must be up on all the new terminology not to mention having the ability to mix up an Alabama Slammer without looking in the recipe book."

"It’s been a tradition for me, my mom, and my grandmother for years.  Ever since my grandparents moved from Wisconsin to Arkansas, it’s has become an annual pilgrimage.  We make the 7 hour drive to their house where Thursday, Friday, and Saturday is filled with activity.

Still other famous people choose to get dirty themselves so they can realize their dreams of a home that is decorated the way they envisioned it to be.  In fact, the television show “Trading Spaces” has actually taken interior decorating to a whole other level. 

People have visions of how they want their lives to be and how they want their living space to be.  Celebrities and regular Joes alike possess these thoughts and dreams and want to see them come to reality.

What’s the difference?  Obviously, it’s because most celebrities have an unlimited budget when it comes to their interior decorating views.  We “regular people” generally don’t have that same luxury."

"Elizabeth has been accepted to four different universities and is having problems choosing which one she prefers.  The decision is made even more difficult because Elizabeth is just 15 years old.

Michael took his SAT test last Saturday.  He scored 1560 out of 1600 including a perfect 800 in math.  He’s looking forward to finishing his schooling as he will be attending Harvard in the fall.

George has been invited to his local college to compete for five scholarships they are awarding amounting to full tuition for four years – about $100,000 each.  The scholarships are awarded based on academic ability and the competition is stiff every year.  He’s expected to finish first and have his schooling paid for.

What do all of these children have in common?  All have been home schooled."

It’s a perplexing condition that drives some people to the brink of madness – nearly literally.  Stephen King wrote a book called, “Insomnia” in which the title character is driven mad by his inability to rest and get enough sleep.  The movie “Fight Club” was also heavily based on a main character that has insomnia.

So many people have this disorder that there are sleep clinics all over the country meant to help those who are afflicted."

Besides keeping your house from sinking into some dark abyss, your lawn is an important part of our environment.  Environmentally, turf grass reduces carbon dioxide emissions, mitigating the heat island effect commonly found in our urban environments."

"My grandson will be getting his first camera for Christmas this year.  It’s a digital camera in bright colors with a nice, big preview screen where he can look at the pictures he’s taken and delete them if he wants to.  He’s three years old.

The business and pleasure of photography has come a long way since the first patent was issued for a camera in 1840.  Over the years, we’ve seen cameras get smaller and smaller, move from separate flashes to built-in flashes, and finally to the absence of film with the digital camera.

Photography is a pastime that is growing in popularity with the rise in digital cameras and the ease with which an everyday person can obtain a beautiful photograph.  No longer is it necessary to haphazardly take pictures and hope you got the shots you really wanted.

No longer will you have to make a special trip to get film processed.  No longer will you have to wait three or four days just for your prints.  Now, there are so many options including simply printing out your pictures on your home printer."

"Women have long been considered the weaker sex, much to the protestations of feminists everywhere.  Unfortunately, this stereotype exists even today in the 21^st century.  Perhaps that’s why violent crimes against women are at an all-time high. 

All women live with a certain level of risk for crime.  In fact, a 21-year-old woman today has a 1 in 4 chance of having a violent crime committed against her.  These crimes range from the shocking such as rape to simply intrusive like car jacking or purse snatching. 

What’s even scarier is that often, the crimes committed against women happen in their own homes by a loved one like a husband or boyfriend.  What a horrible feeling to have to worry about your safety and well being in the place where you should feel safest.

The answer to combating crimes against women isn’t as difficult as you might think.  All women can benefit from self-defense hints and tips.  Some just don’t see the need at all.  But one victim gives the following to think about when considering whether or not you need to know at least a few self-defense measures."
